Trip Organizer - How to get to the hotel

Just where is Hotel The Place in Mal Pais? Mal Pais facing the Pacific Ocean is nestled into the coastal mountains of the Nicoya Peninsula, touching the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve.

You can cruise the wide and white sand beaches for miles and experience some of the most breathtaking sunsets on the peninsula. Our hotel is only 500 feet away from three top surfing spots.

Driving

If you consider renting a car, we recommend having a small 4×4 with a GPS due to poor road conditions that you will encounter in our area throughout the year.

From San Jose:

Option #1
Autopista del Sol Caldera Highway (Highway #27)  is the new highway and it is a 1.30 hour ride to Puntarenas. Stay on this highway, following signs for Caldera and Puntarenas.  There are several toll stations on the highway. When you reach downtown Puntarenas, follow the road straight to the end take a right and you will reach the car line for the ferry to Paquera.

As ferry times are constantly changing, it is always a good idea to check a day or two ahead of time by checking  www.navieratambor.com/horarios-y-tarifas. There are two ferries currently operating, the Tambor 2 and Tambor 3.  Each holds about 160 cars and have air conditioned passenger cabin with snack bar. Cost is approximately $20 one way.

Arrival in Paquera. You follow the only road going direction Tambor- Coban.  Drive straight through Cobano continuing to Mal Pais. When you reach the crossroad separating Mal Pais and Santa Teresa, you will take a left, drive about ¼ mile and you will find us on the left hand side of the road.

This will be about a 4.5 - 5 hour trip,  not including your wait time for the ferry.

Option #2
This is the original drive through the mountains and will take about an hour longer than taking the new toll highway. You will get on the Panamerican Highway # 1 via Palmares, San Ramon, Esparza, towards Puntarenas.  We do recommend to take the new freeway Autopista del sol.

From Liberia:

You will drive south on the Peninsula direction Filadefia, continue to Santa Cruz on Highway 21. You will then reach Nicoya and continue towards Carmona, Jicaral, Lepanto (here the road turns into  a dirt road),  Playa Naranjo and Paquera. From Paquera you follow the same driving directions like mentioned above.
